E Commerce Success - Key One - Tuesday, 15th July, 2008
There are many keys to e commerce success; today we are going to talk about time management. Time is one of our most precious asssets, time can not be replaced unlike other resources such as money. So how do we manage our time? Well time management is easy on paper; however the discipline required, makes it harder to do than it sounds.
The first step to time management is to plan out your day the night before. Planning out your day, gives you the opportunity to understand what you need to achieve tomorrow and how you are going to achieve it. If you need to travel to places to see people, work out the time it takes to see them and then double it.
The second step to time management is to organise your activities so you are doing downtime activities during the off peak hours and uptime activities during the peak business hours. Downtime activities include: Planning, sending emails received from the night before, exercise and developing. Uptime activities include: seeing clients, talking to clients on the phone and also catching up with business partners. I like to think of each day as a gift, we need to make the most of it as we will never get that day back again.
The third step of time 3 is to write down your day on paper. I would recommend buying a hard cover diary, to write notes and schedule out your day. I do have a laptop; however taking out your laptop every hour just to check your schedule is inefficient.
The final step is to take action and follow the plan as planned. It is one thing to write a plan, but another thing to actually follow the plan. Tick off each activity as you complete the activity, so at the end of the day you can review how well your day was or how productive your day was. Remember you are in to make money, so try to aim to only complete activities where you WILL be rewarded for your commitment and hard work. I consider activities such as shopping as downtime activities.
