Software Development New Zealand - Wednesday, 30th April, 2008
Today I am going to talk about the New Zealand software development industry and how we compete on the world stage. I strongly believe that New Zealanders make excellent software developers. Why? Because we are naturally innovative people who always attempt to dream up solutions to our problems. In a nutshell, New Zealand Software Developers are both good business analysis and developers all in one.
Yesterday I reviewed one software company: BPAS, who is currently working on some very innovative software projects. While majority of their projects are for New Zealand companies, his plans are to expand overseas in the following years to come. As a graduate in accounting from the Waikato University, his project regarding BankBuddy seemed very interesting. The idea of BankBuddy is to let users do their accounting on a system designed for non accountants. All I can say is, it's about time. Other projects include product data mining software and New Zealand online business analysis.
While I can go on talking about all the companies I reviewed, in terms of the New Zealand market majority of the software development firms have less than 10 programmers. Majority of the software development firms are small businesses with reports of severeal small firms also taking on overseas work. In my opinion, New Zealand Software Development firms need to starting pushing their ideas globally and dream up ideas on how to compete with cost effective countries such as India.
In the spirit of the New Zealand Made campaign, I thought I'd create my own logo for the idea of starting 100% New Zealand innovative. Remember to get ahead in life, keep dreaming up new ideas and act on those ideas.
